Iceland has a unique landscape with unmatched rugged beauty, volcanos, glaciers, waterfalls, geothermic hot springs, geysers, and so much more, making it a nature lovers’ paradise. So why the nickname fire and ice? Iceland sits in the middle of two tectonic plates: North American and Eurasian, simply put, Iceland is slowly being ripped apart by the forces of nature. With two major tectonic plates under Iceland’s feet, volcanism is the “fire” part of the nickname, with 30 active volcanic systems, and the “ice” part is from the 269 glaciers.![]()
