IVAS’ ENDOWMENT FUNDS SECURES FUTURE AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Minimize

After 31 years of providing education to Veterinarians in the field of Veterinary Acupuncture, IVAS has achieved a new level of not-for-profit success. Two endowment funds have been established, and everyone is encouraged to be a part of this success.

1. The first endowment fund is an unrestricted (any amount donation) research fund to be commingled with similar gifts from others in the Research Endowment Fund. The Board of Directors determines distributions from these unrestricted gifts and the funds are distributed in the name of the donors.

2. The second endowment fund is an unrestricted (any amount donation) to be commingled with similar gifts from others in the General Endowment Fund. The Board of Directors determines distributions from these unrestricted gifts.

3. For generous donations of $25,000 or more, a Field of Interest Fund may be established in the name of the donor. The Board of Directors will determine the charitable purpose as specified by the donor and the funds are distributed in the name of the donor.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

Gifts of cash are a familiar and easy method of giving. An individual may generally deduct the entire amount of the gift from taxable income in the current year. If the gift exceeds 50% of adjusted gross income, the balance may be carried forward for up to five years.

Appreciated property, held over one year, is an increasingly popular alternative to cash gifts. In many (if not most) situations, the full, fair market value of gifts of appreciated property is deductible. Additionally, taxes on capital gains are generally avoided.

A bequest in your will or through a living trust is a popular option because a donor can retain full ownership and use of an asset for as long as he or she lives. Similarly, a distribution from a qualified retirement plan at the end of a donors life means he or she need not give up a source of income prematurely. Both types of gifts can result in substantial estate tax savings.

A gift of life insurance may be made either by designating the Fund as a beneficiary of a policy or by arranging for it to become the owner of the policy. The former entails many of the same advantages as a bequest, whereas the latter can result in current income tax savings. If you make a gift of an existing whole life insurance policy, the gift can be made without reducing income. By doing so, you may receive an immediate and substantial federal income tax charitable deduction based on its cash value, and a deduction for future premiums paid by you. Your federal estate tax may also be reduced or eliminated. Instead of using an existing policy, you may also purchase a new insurance policy, naming the Fund as a beneficiary. Here also, you will receive a charitable deduction for all future premiums paid by you.

You may wish to make a donation in memorium for a family member, friend, mentor, or a patient who has lost a beloved pet. IVAS will contact the bereaved with a card and certificate acknowledging your comforting gesture and caring donation. All donors will receive acknowledgment of their donation, recognition in the IVAS Newsletter and soon-to-be-developed Endowment page on the IVAS website, and no less than an annual fund update.
